Supported Independent Living - Your Journey to Greater Freedom and Confidence

At NSS, our Supported Independent Living (SIL) programs operate to maintain the premise that Australians with disabilities can exist independently and with confidence within their own homes, given adequate assistance. Whether it be moving into your own home, enhancing daily skills, or working towards even greater independence, our personalised SIL programs give you the care, guidance, and practical support you need to flourish.

What is Supported Independent Living (SIL)?

Supported Independent Living is a National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)-funded person-centred program supporting people with disabilities in managing their daily life with confidence in their own home or shared living situation. Our holistic approach to caring and support includes the following:

  • Support with Personal Care: Help with bathing, grooming, dressing, and meal preparation.
  • Household Management Skills: Help with budgeting, grocery shopping, cleaning, and managing everyday tasks.
  • Community Participation: Activities that keep you participating in social activities, attending appointments, and accessing transport.
  • Skill Development: Learning essential skills including cooking, finance, decision-making, and problem-solving.

Who Can Benefit from Our SIL Services?

Our Supported Independent Living services are perfect for Australians who:

  • Want to live independently but require regular support.
  • Are transitioning from family-based care or group housing arrangements.
  • Need ongoing assistance due to physical, intellectual, or psychosocial disabilities.
  • Desire structured yet flexible living support tailored to their individual needs.

Funding Supported Independent Living through the NDIS:

Supported Independent Living is entirely financed by the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) for eligible participants who require assistance with daily life activities. It is referred to as funding for support workers to assist in personal care, home management, and community engagement, only when the support meets the NDIS criteria of being reasonable and necessary.

What’s Not Covered by SIL Funding?

NDIS funding for SIL covers support services, but does not include:

  • Rent or mortgage payments
  • Grocery shopping and meal expenses
  • Household utilities (electricity, gas, water, internet)
  • Personal costs like clothing and toiletries
  • Housing search or rental bond assistance

Possible Additional Housing and Financial Supports:

If you require assistance with accommodation or related expenses, you may be entitled to the following:

  • State and Territory Housing Programs: Each state has its own schemes, including cheap and social housing, which tend to have a specific waiting period before applications can be approved.
  • Commonwealth Rent Assistance: Assistance from Centrelink in terms of monetary value to participants who are receiving a Disability Support Pension.
  • Utility Relief Grants: A few states of Australia provide some forms of grants toward electricity and water bills to assist eligible clients.
